Heavy rainfalls and isolated thunderstorms will hit the City of Sails on Tuesday afternoon as a narrow rain band moves across the region.

MetService meteorologist Amy Rossiter told Newshub the front is currently sitting out west of Auckland and is forecast to bring heavy rainfalls and some isolated thunderstorms.

"The band is expected to move north-eastwards over Auckland later this afternoon and it will bring a brief period of rain to the region."

The front has already made landfall in Western Auckland and is expected to move across the region between 4pm and 5pm.

Rossiter said the band is expected to move eastwards past Auckland by Tuesday evening, which could be followed by a "few showers" later on Tuesday night.

"This front extends all the way from Northland, all the way down through to Central North Island, and that line is moving across the North Island later on this afternoon."
