It might be time to dig your winter clothes out as NIWA warns it's monitoring a "particularly cold" air mass coming next week.

High pressure is set to bring settled weather to New Zealand this weekend, however, a front is expected to move north onto the lower South Island early Monday morning.

"This will bring another period of heavy rain and strong winds to the west and south of the South Island," MetService said on Facebook.

"A heavy rain warning has been issued for Westland, a heavy rain watch has been issued for Fiordland, and a strong wind watch has been issued for Southland."

Then on Tuesday, NIWA is watching for a cold air mass to head up north from the Southern Ocean and drive a chill over New Zealand.

"It might be a good weekend to find your heavier blanket and winter clothes in preparation!" NIWA said on Facebook.

"The air mass could produce daytime highs in the lower 10Cs down south and mid-10Cs for the lower and central north.

"If we go toward El Niño this winter, we may have more southerlies than in recent winters..."
