The president of the Auckland Black Power chapter says he's relieved children in the gang pad targeted in a drive-by shooting overnight weren't injured.

The headquarters for the Auckland Black Power chapter on Jolson Rd in Mt Wellington was targeted in a drive-by shooting at around 11pm on Saturday night.

A police spokesperson confirmed the drive-by shooting in a statement on Sunday morning saying "a number of shots were fired at the exterior of the building from the roadside".

Footage from the scene shows the windows and walls of the top storey of the house riddled with bullet holes.

President of the Auckland Black Power chapter Mark Pitman confirmed to Newshub he was inside the house at the time of the shooting but didn't hear it.

Pitman said he had earplugs in because there were people outside drinking with loud music going.

He told Newshub his family was asleep, including a 10-month-old child, at the time of the shooting and couldn't hear anything.

"We woke up this morning to see it on our walls there. Luckily the children are okay that is the main thing ... that's all we are worried about is the children."

An investigation is underway and police are currently completing a scene examination with nearby residents told to expect to see an increased police presence in the area, a spokesperson said.

"Anyone with information in relation to the shooting is asked to contact the Police via 105 or anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111, referencing file number 230402/6377."

The spokesperson added, "thankfully no one was injured" in the shooting.

A neighbour told NZ Herald his wife was home alone at the time of the shooting and was "very scared".

"She's told me she heard gunshots. I cannot get to her; it's pretty scary for her."
