Newmarket train station has reopened after a nearby fire prompted evacuation.

A photo sent to Newshub just after 1pm showed smoke billowing into the sky near the area.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson told Newshub there was a large rubbish fire in a nearby basement car park.

Nine appliances were sent as well as "a few" support vehicles.

As of 2:30pm, firefighters were in attendance and there was no word on whether the fire was out, the spokesperson added.

All people have been accounted for.

Dave Woon, assistant commander for Auckland City Fire District, told Newshub they're getting structural engineers in to have a look at the damage done to the building.

At the time, he didn't know how long residents in the building attached to the car park would have to stay outside for while firefighters were on the scene.

Auckland Transport said Newmarket Station was evacuated and train delays were expected on the western, southern, and Onehunga lines since some trains were being held on the tracks.

The station opened at about 4:20pm. Three rail buses continue to operate between Britomart and Newmarket, Auckland Transport said, and Onehunga line trains remain on hold. Two rail buses are running between Onehunga and Penrose until 7pm.

All lanes in both directions on Remuera Road, Broadway, and at the intersection of Broadway and Remuera Road have reopened.

Buses are returning to their normal routes, Auckland Transport said, including bus route 75. Delays and possible cancellations are expected while any late buses return to schedule.
