An innocent motorist is in hospital with moderate injuries after a driver who allegedly fled from police was involved in a crash a short time later.

The driver fled at about 1:40am after failing to stop when signalled by officers in the Auckland suburb of Manurewa, police said in a statement. Officers tried to stop the car because a "person of interest" was inside.

After fleeing, the driver was tracked by the police eagle helicopter as the vehicle entered State Highway 20 and headed west.

"The crash occurred as the vehicle exited at Massey Rd," police said. "Two people from the fleeing vehicle were arrested."

Police said charges have been laid against a 24-year-old woman for allegedly failing to stop and dangerous driving.

A 30-year-old man was also arrested and due to appear in court on an existing warrant and for also allegedly failing to stop.
