MetServices' website at 8am on Sunday showed the North Shore in Auckland is currently the windiest place in New Zealand, with gusts of 43km/h.

It comes as MetService says strong northeasterly will affect the upper North Island on Sunday and Monday.

"Warm air dragged in by the northeasterlies means cloud and isolated showers are forecast for a good portion of the North Island the next couple days," MetService said.

The wind also lashed parts of the upper North Island on Saturday, with NIWA saying a peak wind gust of 81km/h was recorded at the Sky Tower in downtown Auckland.

"Hold on to your hats! The upper North Island has been pretty windy today (Saturday)," Niwa said.

Kaitaia also saw strong wind on Saturday with a peak wind gust of 73km/h, this was followed by Leigh and Manukau Heads at 72km/h and Dargaville at 65km/h.

But apart from the wind, most places around the country should see a fine day on Sunday with some places getting a few showers.

Wellington is the pick of the big cities, with a sunny day and a high of 20 degrees predicted.
