Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) crews have retrieved a truck driver stranded on top of his submerged vehicle after it rolled into the Hutt River.

A FENZ spokeswoman told Newshub a ladder appliance was used to pluck the person stuck on top of the cab of their truck, which was carrying gravel at the time of the crash.

In a statement, a police spokesperson said they received a report of a truck in the Hutt River in Heretaunga at about 10:30am on Thursday.

"The driver has climbed out himself and is on top of the cab, [with] no apparent injuries."

Police said State Highway 2 is closed and will be "for some time" while emergency services recover the vehicle.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible, as delays are likely."

A Wellington Free Ambulance spokesperson told Newshub the driver was taken to Hutt Hospital in a moderate condition.

Newshub understands a tow truck has arrived on the scene to remove the truck.
