It's been another fatal morning on Aotearoa's roads after two people died in separate crashes on state highways.

One person is dead after a crash on Nelson's Whakatu Expressway SH6, between Quarantine Rd and the Richmond Deviation overnight.

Emergency services were called to Whakatu Dr, Stoke at around 1:30am where they found one person dead at the scene.

A police spokesperson said the serious crash unit is investigating the crash.

Waka Kotahi is warning of "major delays" on SH6 as the fatal crash has forced the closure of Whakatu Dr in both directions.

"While there are local detours available, road users are warned there will be significant delays travelling between Stoke and Nelson this morning with significant congestion likely on local roads. Drivers should avoid the area if possible."

Further north in Hawke's Bay, a person died following a crash on SH2 near Takapau in the early hours of Friday morning.

A police spokesperson said it appears a single vehicle collided with a power pole at about 12:10am.

Police say enquiries into the crash are underway.

The tragic end to the week follows a heartbreaking start after six people died in morning crashes in the North and South Islands on Monday.
