Wellington City Council is encouraging Wellingtonians to "stay safe and stay dry" as the region is battered by heavy rainfall.

MetService has issued Wellington and Wairarapa south of Greytown with a heavy rain watch from 10am Wednesday to 9pm Wednesday.

"With heavy rain forecast for the rest of the day, we recommend the good people of Pōneke stay home, stay safe and stay dry," said a Wellington City Council spokesperson.

Heavy rain has caused surfaced flooding across the city's roads from Island Bay to Tawa.

"Travel to the conditions if it's necessary to venture out."

Flooding on roads:

  • Island Bay - Beach St
  • Berhampore - Adelaide Rd
  • Seatoun - Dundas St
  • Crofton Downs - Churchill Dr
  • Owhiro Bay - Happy Valley Rd
  • Newtown - Kenwayn Tce
  • Roseneath - Grafton Rd
  • Aro Valley - Aro St
  • Miramar - The Quadrant
  • Oriental Parade - Oriental Bay
  • Tawa - Sunrise Boulevard

Kilbirnie's Salek St also has a blocked drain and a reserve on Brooklyn's Lincoln St is flooded.

Wellington City Council is urging those thinking about taking part in recreational water activities to follow the advice of Land, Air Water Aotearoa (LAWA), which suggests staying out of the water for two to three day after heavy rain.

Wellington City Council says if Wellingtonians spot anything hazardous they should report it through the council's Fixit app or call 04 499 4444.
