Large dogs now allowed on Auckland's buses under 8 week trial

Auckland Transport will allow large dogs on all buses citywide as part of an 8-week trial.

From this Sunday 21 May, bigger dogs that can't fit in a carrier can board buses, if they wear a lead and an approved muzzle.

Large dogs are already allowed on trains and ferries when wearing a lead and muzzle.

Councillor Josephine Bartley is excited about the pet-friendly decision.

“Changes like this make catching public transport an option for more people," she said.

She paid tribute to councillor Dr Cathy Casey for pushing for the change.

“I’m definitely looking forward to taking my dog Milo on the bus soon!” said Cr Bartley.

AT permanently gave small pets the green light to board buses across Tāmaki Makaurau last December, as long as they were in approved carriers.

Luke Clarke from AT said the encouraging response proves residents want more travel options.

“This trial reflects our commitment to make public transport easier and more accessible for all Aucklanders," he said.

"We’re excited to see larger four-legged passengers joining their owners on our buses."

AT could make the policy permanent if deemed successful.
