Mama Hooch trial: Fourth man found not guilty of sexual violation

A fourth man on trial for alleged sex crimes relating to a former Christchurch night spot has been found not guilty of sexual violation.

The man is an associate of the two men who were recently convicted of a raft of sexually motivated crimes - relating to Mama Hooch bar.

One of those men has previously pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting the complainant on the night in question.

Judge Paul Mabey delivered his verdict to the Christchurch District Court on Tuesday afternoon and ruled that there was "reasonable doubt" that the violation had taken place.

Judge Mabey gave significant weight to the evidence of another woman who was at the address that night in August 2018. She refuted the evidence given by the complainant.

That woman is the current partner of another man who faced charges in the first trial - but was acquitted of all charges of a sexual nature.

Of the four men to have faced charges across two judge-alone trials relating to sexually motivated crimes either committed at Mama Hooch or originating from Mama Hooch, two have been convicted.

They await sentencing in July for convictions including rape, sexual violation and stupefying.
