Police report an increase in Mongrel Mob members in Palmerston North after a man was fatally injured earlier this week.

Emergency services were called to a property on Dahlia St at about 10:25pm on Thursday and took 35-year-old Raniel Kiu to hospital where he died.

Inquiries into his death continue, but police say it involved people known to each other.

"Police would like to reassure the public that this incident was confined to a group of people, and we are confident there is no ongoing risk to the public," said Detective Inspector Craig Sheridan, district manager criminal investigations.

"There have been an increase in Mongrel Mob members in the city since Mr Kiu's death, and while there have been no significant issues reported, Police will respond to any if they arise."

A post-mortem has been completed and Kiu's body has been returned to his whānau. The scene examination is expected to continue until at least Monday, and police are working to speak with a number of people.

"This is likely to take some time - however we are committed to getting answers for his family," Det Insp Sheridan added.

Anyone with information about what happened is urged to contact police via their 105 phone service, referencing file number 230512/9437.
