Two people have been arrested after shooting at a police car in the Bay of Plenty earlier this month.

Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Wilson said police executed two search warrants, one in Kawerau and the other in Te Teko on Tuesday.

This saw two people arrested and both charged with using a firearm against law enforcement.

A 31-year-old man from Kawerau will appear in Manukau District Court and a 27-year-old man from Te Teko is due to appear in Whakatane District Court. Both men will appear in court on Wednesday.

Police said they have "zero tolerance" for offending involving firearms, particularly when officers are targeted.

"I hope these arrests will ensure our staff have the confidence to do the job they love without the fear of not returning home to their families," Wilson said.

"We are a small community in the Eastern Bay of Plenty and we need to continue to receive help from the public to always make this a safe place to work and live."

Police aren't ruling out further arrests and we will continue to conduct search warrants as part of their efforts to "suppress gang activity".

"Our communities can help us crack down on crime by reporting incidents - where there is criminal or anti-social behaviour occurring right now, call 111," Wilson said.

"Other information can be reported to Police on 105, or anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111."
