Video: Hammer-wielding thieves caught on camera in New Plymouth Michael Hill smash-and-grab

Footage has emerged of a daylight-aggravated robbery in New Plymouth and now police are appealing for witnesses.

At about 12:10pm on Friday afternoon, two men drove a stolen black 2001 Subaru Impreza onto the footpath of Currie Street before entering what Newshub understands to be a Michael Hill Jeweller store.

In a statement, Detective Senior Sergeant Gerard Bouterey said the pair were armed with hammers and smashed glass cabinets before taking a number of jewellery items.

"The men left the scene in the stolen vehicle and travelled along Currie Street to Carrington Street, at one point driving on the wrong side of the road."

A witness Newshub spoke to said the men ran over cafe chairs while dashing from the scene.

Det Snr Sgt Bouterey said the men then abandoned the stolen car on Carrington St near Pandarves St intersection.

The witness told Newshub another witness attempted to chase the pair down in their ute, but had no luck.

And Det Snr Sgt Bouterey said the offenders have still not been caught.

One offender was wearing a blue Puma hooded top, dark pants and a blue surgical mask. The other offender was wearing a black coloured top and pants and had what appeared to be a dark bandana over his face.

Police say a vehicle with registration number GAE332 was stolen from the suburb of Merrilands between midnight and 10:30am on Friday.

"The offenders are known to have been travelling around the area of the retail store for at least 20 minutes prior to the robbery."

Police are asking anyone who saw the vehicle at any point on Friday morning to call police on 105 and quote file number P054539061.

"We urge anyone who recorded the incident or has CCTV footage from around the Currie Street area between 11:50am to 12:20pm, or any other information which may assist with our enquiries to share this with police."

Det Snr Sgt Bouterey said the behaviour will "not be tolerated".

"We are committed to doing everything we can to ensure these offenders are located and held accountable for their actions."

Newshub has approached Michael Hill for comment.
