MetService is warning of more thunderstorms for parts of the North Island on Thursday after more unprecedented rain struck on Tuesday, while a cold change is expected to bring snow to the south.
"There is a moderate risk of thunderstorms in western areas from Northland to Manawatu, including Coromandel Peninsula, western Bay of Plenty, Rotorua, Taupo and Taihape," said MetService. "These thunderstorms are expected to bring heavy rain, hail and strong winds gusting 80 to 100km/h.
"A lower risk of thunderstorms covers Wairarapa, Wellington, coastal Marlborough and north and mid-Canterbury."
While this shouldn't match the intensity of what the North Island experienced on Tuesday, conditions remained unstable, MetService said.
Road snowfall warnings
MetService has issued road snowfall warnings for Desert Rd (State Highway 1), Lewis Pass (SH7), Arthur's and Porters Passes (SH73), Lindis Pass (SH8) and Crown Range and Milford Rds.
"Cold southerlies may bring heavy snow to parts of the South Island late Wednesday and early Thursday," MetService said in a statement.
"A strong, cold southerly change is spreading over the South Island today and is expected to bring snow to the hills and mountains, with possible heavy falls about parts of Southland, Otago and Canterbury."
There's also a heavy snow watch in place for the Mackenzie Country and the northern hills of Southland.
