Woman charged with murder after deaths of two young children in Ruakākā

The woman charged with murder in relation to a double homicide in the Northland town of Ruakākā has appeared in court and has been granted name suppression.

The woman appeared in Whangarei District Court and was remanded in custody without plea until next appearance at High Court on June 2.

Emergency services were called to a property in Peter Snell Dr on Monday morning where two children were found dead.

Scene examinations have been ongoing and on Tuesday police said a 25-year-old woman had been charged with murder.

"This is an incredibly distressing situation for the family involved, along with first responders and police who attended," said Det Insp Bridget Doell, of Northland. "Police and Victim Support has been working closely to support all those involved in this tragic event.

"Police will continue to support the Ruakākā community through this understandably difficult time," Doell said, adding there would be an increased number of officers in the area in the coming days.

Doell urged the Northland community to look after one another.

No further comment could be provided as the matter was before the court, she said.

Whangārei Mayor Vince Cocurullo said on Monday the deaths were "tragic".

"From council’s perspective, all I can say is that this is tragic and shocking," he said in a statement to Newshub.

"The family and community will be reeling and will need support. We express our heartfelt compassion to everyone involved."

Ruakākā is a small beachside town about 30km south of Whangārei.
