Albany attack: Video shows patrons running from restaurant, using chair as shield after axe-wielding attack

New footage has shown the moment scared patrons of an Albany restaurant fled the scene after a man attacked and injured three people.

CCTV footage, supplied to Newshub, shows the chaotic scenes when several patrons inside the north Auckland restaurant were attacked by a man believed to be carrying an axe.

The footage, which is from a camera outside a restaurant, shows several people fleeing and one person trying to defend himself with a chair.

Police responded to multiple calls about patrons in three restaurants being assaulted just after 9pm on Monday.

The restaurants were Zhang Liang Malatang, Yue's Dumpling Kitchen and Maya Hotpot.

Officers arrested a 24-year-old man who was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He made a brief appearance in the North Shore District Court on Tuesday morning in front of Community Magistrate Rosemary Fitzpatrick.

The man was represented by barrister Michael Kan.

Kan sought interim name suppression for his client, which was granted, along with suppression of his address and occupation.
