One name that might've surprised Kiwis on the King's Birthday and Coronation Honours is Queen Camilla, who received the top honour, but what has she done to receive the accolade?

It was announced on Monday morning Queen Camilla had been made an Additional Member of The Order of New Zealand (ONZ) for her services to New Zealand in support of King Charles III and his relationship with the country, and promoting charities.

The ONZ is the highest honour, with its ordinary membership limited to 20 living persons at any time.

The newly-appointed Queen has visited New Zealand as The Duchess of Cornwall with The King (then as The Prince of Wales) on three occasions in 2012, 2015 and 2019.

"During her visits to New Zealand, she engaged with organisations aligned with her charitable work and interests," an official statement released by the Government said.

"This has included engagement with Arohata Women's Prison, the Wellington SPCA, and charities supporting migrant women, new mothers, and literacy programmes."

The Queen has become Patron or President of more than 90 charities since 2005, focusing her charitable work on health and wellbeing, literacy, sustainability, the arts, animal welfare and survivors of rape and sexual assault.

She has also met with family violence groups Shine and the Battered Women's Trust and was awarded the Trust's Refuge Diamond Pin, which recognises service to families who have experienced violence.

"She has promoted the wellbeing of older citizens and keeping active, engaging with several such programmes in Christchurch, including Senior Chef, where she launched a cookbook for elderly people living alone," the statement said.

In her role as Vice-Patron of the Royal Commonwealth Society, The Queen launched the 2020 Queen's Commonwealth Essay competition and addressed workshops for student writers in Christchurch.

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said Queen Camilla's appointment to the ONZ was in keeping with tradition.

"In keeping with tradition, Queen Camilla is appointed to the Order of New Zealand. Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh were similarly recognised for their support of the monarch of the time," Hipkins said.

"Queen Camilla already takes an interest in a number of New Zealand charities, including support for migrant women, new mothers and literacy programmes."

Other notable recipients of the King's Birthday Honours, are former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who was made a Dame Grand Companion, and Wayne Smith, who will be made Knights Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Dame Jacinda didn't want to speak publicly but said in a statement she was "incredibly humbled" by the honour.

She admitted she was in "two minds" about accepting the honour but said she was encouraged to by so many Kiwis.

"I was in two minds about accepting this acknowledgement. So many of the things we went through as a nation over the last five years were about all of us rather than one individual," Ardern said.

"But I have heard that said by so many Kiwis who I have encouraged to accept an honour over the years. And so for me this a way to say thank you - to my family, to my colleagues, and to the people who supported me to take on the most challenging and rewarding role of my life."
