Man charged for Wellington hit in run that left two people seriously injured

A man has been charged with a number of offences including driving while suspended and being over the legal alcohol limit after a hit-and-run in Wellington on Sunday morning. 

Police said in a statement on Sunday they were called to Cable Street at around 1:15am after reports of a crash involving a car and two pedestrians. 

The car fled the scene and the two injured pedestrians were taken to hospital. 

Police said the car was later found on Evans Bay Parade and the occupants, a 23-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were arrested.

In an update on Monday morning, police confirmed the 23-year-old man has now been charged following the serious crash. 

The man faces a number of charges including excess breath alcohol causing injury, failing to stop to ascertain injury following a crash, failing to stop for police and driving while suspended.

Police said the man will appear in Wellington District Court on Monday.

"Police cannot rule out further charges in relation to the incident," a police spokesperson said.
