Police are bringing in additional resources and vow to hold violent gang members to account after a senior Mongrel Mob leader was killed in a Bay of Plenty "disorder-related incident".

Steven Rota Taiatini died after he was found with serious injuries on St John St in Ōpōtiki on Friday, June 9.

Stuff reports Taiatini was believed to be the president of the Mongrel Mob Barbarians, a chapter of the Mongrel Mob.

In the aftermath, Ōpōtiki locals say there has been an increase in the gang's presence and they're worried about the gang seeking vengeance.

Eastern Bay of Plenty Acting Area Commander Tristan Murray said in a statement Police "recognise the concern the public is feeling after the homicide".

"Police will have an increased presence and visibility throughout the town," he said.

"Additional resources have been brought in from outside the district, providing 24/7 coverage in Ōpōtiki over the coming days.

"This is to offer reassurance to our wider community that may be feeling unsafe following recent gang-related events."

He added the investigation into Taiatini's death continues with the support of investigative staff from across the country.

Anyone with specific information is asked to come forward and speak to the inquiry team by calling 105 and quoting file 230610/2652, or providing information anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

"We continue to urge anyone who witnesses anything suspicious or has concerns for their safety to call 111 immediately," Cmdr Murray said.

"The faster information is received, the faster Police are able to respond, investigate, and hold those who cause this harm accountable for their actions.

"Police will act quickly and decisively to hold to account gang members who commit violence in our community."
