Footage emerges of toilet paper aisle in flames at Mt Wellington Countdown

Footage has emerged showing a blazing fire inside an Auckland supermarket.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand was called to the blaze at Countdown in Mt Wellington at 6:15pm on Thursday.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze but the store was "extensively smoke-logged".

Footage from inside the store shows a fire raging in the toilet paper aisle. A security guard can be seen using a fire extinguisher to try to put out the blaze.

A woman can be heard yelling "fire" in the background.

Police told Newshub an investigation is underway and the fire is being treated as arson.

"We are treating the fire as arson and have been reviewing CCTV footage as part of our investigation. We will release an update proactively," a spokesperson said.

FENZ shift manager Ryan Geen told Newshub two appliances were sent to the store.

Green said there were no reports of injuries and a fire investigator is on their way to the scene to determine the cause of the fire.

A Countdown spokesperson said the Mount Wellington supermarket will stay closed while the damage is assessed.

The spokesperson said staff at work at the time of the blaze are safe and receiving support.

"We'll also make sure any food that is damaged and is edible is donated to our local food rescue partner."

They said the store will reopen when it's safe and thanked customers for their understanding.
