Wellington rescue teams are searching for two off-road motorcyclists believed to be in their late 50s after they failed to return on Sunday evening.

A police spokesperson said teams were deployed on Monday morning after the pair did not return from their off-road motorcycle ride in Upper Hutt's Akatarawa Forest.

Police said the pair's 4WD vehicles were found at the entrance of Akatarawa Forest.

Search and Rescue teams were deployed to the air on Sunday night, with the search resuming on Monday morning.

A MetService spokesperson told Newshub temperatures in surrounding areas dipped to 3C overnight. A small amount of rain also fell, though fortunately there were light winds.
