Police, Defence Force called to Masterton over unexploded bomb

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has been called to Masterton over an unexploded bomb.

Police said a cordon is in place around a business on Ngaumutawa Road, Masterton while Police and NZDF respond to a report of unexploded ordnance at the premises.

"Please avoid the area until the cordon is lifted," a police spokesperson said.

A NZDF Explosive Ordnance Disposal team responded to a request for assistance from police in Masterton where an item was identified that looked like a mortar bomb. The item was investigated and discovered to be inert.

"Until these items are deemed safe by a subject matter expert, caution should be applied. If you discover an item that you believe may be dangerous remain clear of the item and contact NZ Police as soon as possible," a NZDF spokesperson said.

In September last year, police and NZDF were called to a house in the Auckland suburb of Epsom after a bomb was found in someone's backyard. This saw nearby properties evaluated as a precaution.

A thudding bang rang out on Pukenui Rd as police detonated the old mortar.

When Newshub spoke to residents in the area, they said nothing like this has ever happened before.

"I was quite surprised because this is a very posh area, a very busy street and we don't really expect any bomb threats over here," resident Adi Kalan told Newshub.
