Parents and children have something to look forward to as sunshine across the country is forecast for the second week of the school holidays, after what has been a wet and windy start to the break.

It's not all sunshine though as rain is also forecast for Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch this week.

Auckland kids shouldn't need to wrap up in too many layers, as they can generally expect temperatures around 15C with fine spells and bouts of rain and showers each day.

Temperatures will be sitting around 12C in Wellington and Christchurch for the next five days.

Families should prepare for intermittent clouds, showers and fine skies.

However, most parts of the country are still facing a wet and miserable Sunday before they get to better weather beginning from Monday.

Eastern Wellington is under a heavy rain warning today, until 6pm tonight.

Southern Hawke's Bay is also under a heavy rain warning, while northern parts of the region are under a heavy rain watch.
