After a wild day of weather on Monday, that saw severe gales, chilly temperatures and snow, there could be a small reprieve before it turns bad again to end the week.
Strong wind gusts were on and off throughout Monday in Auckland, which caused a nightmare for motorists with lanes on the Auckland Harbour Bridge closed at various points throughout the day.
A barrage of weather warnings and watches were issued for large parts of New Zealand on Monday, with some of them easing by Tuesday.
It was also a windy night for many in the lower South Island. MetService said gusts of 104km/h were recorded in Moeraki, 87km/h in Invercargill and 81km/h in Dunedin on Monday evening.
After a windy and cold day, WeatherWatch said its 24-hour rain map until 7am Wednesday shows a much better day for large parts of New Zealand.
WeatherWatch expects it to still be windy on Tuesday with gales for some places but overall it will ease "back slowly".
On top of that, WeatherWatch is expecting temperatures to be warmer than average during the day and at night for many parts of the country on Tuesday and Wednesday.
But that calm weather isn't expected to last for long, with a new front potentially approaching New Zealand, which could bring more wind and rain to the North Island for the weekend.
Weather warnings and watches
Weather warnings and watches still remain for parts of New Zealand but most will ease on Tuesday or Wednesday morning.
An orange wind warning is in place for Clutha, Dunedin and North Otago until 9am on Wednesday, with severe gale west to southwesterly gusting 120km/h expected to lash these areas.
"Strong wind gusts could damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures. Driving may be hazardous, especially for high-sided vehicles and motorcycles," MetService warns.
Strong wind is also expected to lash parts of the central North Island, the top of the South Island and the bottom of the South.
A strong wind watch has been issued for the Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty west of Whakatane, including Rotorua, Taupo, Taihape about and east of Mount Ruapehu and Hawke's Bay about and south of State Highway 5 until Wednesday morning.
MetService warns west to southwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.
Further south, a strong wind watch is also in place for Tasman District, Nelson City, Marlborough south of Blenheim, Kaikoura District and Southland southeast of Riversdale, including Stewart Island.
The watch for these areas will ease on Tuesday afternoon or evening.
