Weather: Severe weather warnings stretch across motu as icy southwest flow dumps snow, heavy rain, strong winds

MetService's severe weather map makes for colour viewing as heavy rain, snow and strong winds are hitting parts of Aotearoa. 

A cold strong southwest flow will affect Aotearoa, with "several troughs" embedded into it, which MetService says will bring snow to low levels over the southern part of the South Island on Sunday, followed by possible heavy rain on Monday. 

MetService's website says strong west-to-southwesterly winds are expected to lash many regions across the motu, with many areas under a strong wind watch.

There are several orange heavy snow warnings, which MetSerivce warns could disrupt travel, and damage trees and powerlines.

Otago south of line from Queenstown to Alexandra and to Mosgiel, also Southland and Stewart Island are under a heavy snow warning from 9am Sunday to 1am Monday. 

"Periods of heavy snow. Expect a further 15 to 20cm to accumulate above 300 meters on top of what has already fallen," MetService's website said.

Fiordland about and south of Doubtful Sound is under a heavy snow warning too from 9am Sunday to 10pm Sunday.

MetService has issued many strong wind watches across the motu, stretching from the top of the North Island right down to the bottom of the South Island.

Northland, Auckland, Great Barrier Island, Waikato, Waitomo, Coromandel Penisula, and Bay of Plenty west of Whakatane will be under a strong wind watch from 3pm Monday to 9pm Monday.

Taranaki, Taumarunui, Taupō, Taihape, Whanganui, Manawatu, the Tararua District, and Hawke's Bay about and south of State Highway 5 will be under a strong wind watch from 12pm Monday to 7pm Monday.

Nelson's strong wind watch comes into effect at 6am Monday and ends 6pm Monday. 

Marlborough south of Blenheim will be under a strong wind watch from 3am Monday to 9pm Monday.

Fiordland, Southland, Stewart Island, Clutha and Dunedin's stong wind watch comes into effect at 4am Monday and ends 2pm Monday. 

Southland and Clutha are also under a strong rain watch from 3am Monday to 6pm Monday.  

There are many of the country's State Highway networks under a road snowfall warning.

MetService has issued the Desert Road, State Highway One with a road snowfall warning from 10am Sunday to 7pm Sunday.

Lewis Pass, State Highway 7 is under a road snowfall warning too from 10am Sunday to 3pm Sunday.

Arthur's Pass, State Highway 73's road snowfall warning comes into effect at 4am Monday and ends 9am Monday.

Lindis Pass, State Highway 8 is currently under a road snowfall warning which ends at 6pm Sunday.

Crown Range Road's warning came into effect at 10am Sunday and ends 7pm Sunday.

Milford Road State Highway 94 is under a road snowfall warning from 10am Sunday to 3am Monday.

Dunedin to Waitati Highway, State Highway One is under one too, which came into effect at 10am Sunday and ends at 10pm.
