Yanfei Bao: Police hope to resume search for missing real estate agent at Christchurch river on Wednesday

The search for missing real estate agent Yanfei Bao is being hampered by "unfavourable" conditions, police say.

The 44-year-old went missing while out working as a real estate agent on July 19. What was initially a missing person inquiry is now a homicide investigation.

High water levels at Halswell River and Ellesmere Lake forced police to pause the search for Bao on Saturday.

In an update on Monday, Detective Inspector Nicola Reeves said officers will continue to monitor waters levels but don't expect search efforts to resume until later this week.

"Conditions on the Halswell River and Ellesmere Lake remain unfavourable for searching this morning, however, this will be continually reassessed, with searches in the area most likely able to resume on Wednesday," Det Insp Reeves said.

"Other enquiries continue to be carried out as Police continue to receive information about Ms Bao's disappearance."

Police have now received more than 200 pieces of information in relation to Bao's disappearance and continue to ask the public for any sightings of a silver Mitsubishi sedan.

"We continue to be interested in any information relating to sightings of a silver Mitsubishi sedan with the registration DPH101, particularly on Thursday 20 July," Det Insp Reeves said.

"Information can be given to Police via 105, either by calling or going online to https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105 using 'Update Report'. Please reference file number 230720/5911."

Reeves said on Saturday police remained determined to find Bao.

It comes after a Givealittle page was set up by a close friend of Bao, Vani Liu, on Saturday.

The Givealittle page has so far raised over $38,000 at the time of writing, with Liu revealing Bao's family is travelling to New Zealand.

"Yanfei was not only a skilled professional but also a beloved partner to Paul, a cherished daughter, and a loving mother to her young child, Momo," Liu wrote on the Givealittle page.

"As her family, friends, and community, we cannot fathom the pain they are enduring, and we want to offer our assistance during this unimaginably difficult time."

Timeline

Bao, a mother-of-one, recently joined Harcourts as a real estate agent and has extensive experience in sales.

She was last seen on Vickerys Rd in Wigram at about 10:30am on July 19. Her car was left parked on Iroquois Pl.

Police and Bao's family had said her disappearance was very out of character and had deep concerns for her safety.

Officers earlier located one of her cell phones nearly 7km from where she was last seen.

Investigators found it in the grass berm along the Southern Motorway thanks to assistance from the public.

Investigators have now searched three properties as part of the probe, dubbed 'Operation Helo'.

A 52-year-old man has previously been arrested and charged with kidnapping Bao and he appeared in court last week. He was arrested at Christchurch Airport trying to flee the country.

Police said the man, who has been granted name suppression, would "likely" face further charges but none have been laid since his arrest.
