Christchurch motorcyclist dies after crashing into vehicle while fleeing police

A motorcyclist has died in Christchurch after fleeing from police and then crashing late on Sunday evening.

Canterbury Metro Area Commander Superintendent Lane Todd told Newshub the ordeal started at around 11:40pm when police signalled for the motorcyclist to stop, but they failed to do so.

The motorcyclist fled and while police did not pursue, the rider crashed into a car at the intersection of Barbadoes Street and Edgeware Road.

Todd said the motorcyclist received immediate medical assistance but died at the scene while the female driver of the car suffered minor to moderate injuries.

"Our thoughts are with the deceased man’s family," Todd said.

The incident will be referred to the IPCA and the Serious Crash and Critical Incident investigations are in their early stages, Todd said.

"Anyone who saw what happened who has not yet spoken to Police is asked to please come forward," Todd said.
