Gloriavale's leader Howard Temple facing 27 charges of indecent assault against young girls

Gloriavale's overseeing shepherd Howard Temple can be revealed as the West Coast man accused of indecent assault against 10 young girls.

Court documents allege the historical offending happened between March 1998 and 2022.

Temple is facing a total of 27 charges, all of which he denies.

The 10 complainants, aged between 9 and 20 years old at the time of the alleged offending, were born in the reclusive Christian community but are not related to Temple, who has been in leadership roles for 40 years.

His name and any particulars that might lead to his identification or that of the Gloriavale Christian community were suppressed by the court last month.

Ongoing suppression orders were not sought by Temple and his lawyer at his second appearance in the Greymouth District Court on Wednesday.

Temple entered not guilty pleas and has opted for a judge-alone trial.
