Police seek Dariush Talagi after homicide on Auckland's Queen Street

Police have named the man they're seeking over the shooting on Auckland's Queen Street that killed one person.

The shooting happened at about 11:30pm on Thursday near the intersection of Queen and Fort Sts. Police said officers were called to the scene after reports of fighting among a small group, where one person pulled out a firearm and fired a number of shots.

Two people were rushed to hospital in critical condition after one was shot in the head, and the other in the abdomen.

One died in hospital on Friday after they were taken off life support, while the second person remains in a stable condition.

Now police say Dariush Talagi can help with their homicide investigation - and warn he is "considered dangerous".

Talagi is 24 years old and has distinctive facial tattoos. Police say there isn't a risk to the wider public, however it's important he's located.

"Talagi has a warrant for his arrest and is considered dangerous", Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Bolton said in a statement.

"Our message to Dariush would be to hand himself in, or for anyone who sees him to call us immediately."

Anyone who sees Talagi, or has knowledge of his location, should call Police on 111 and reference the file number 230804/3399.

Information can also be given to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The shooting comes just two weeks after another shooting 250 metres away - sparking pleas for more police in the area.

Heart of the City's CEO Viv Beck said Aotearoa New Zealand is still viewed as a safe place compared to other countries, but action is needed now.

"We want to see more police, and the other thing that we think would be helpful is a downtown police station again. That is something that people have really missed, and we'd like to see that back."

Newshub also spoke to the public in Auckland's CBD on Friday to gauge their mood.

"It's scary, yeah, it's scary. My son lives up here and I think every time something happens, what are you living there for? Honestly it's awful aye," one mother told Newshub.

"[I] definitely feel safe at the moment, but I probably wouldn't at night," said one man.

"Especially as a girl alone as well," his partner added.

"NZ used to be very safe when I came here 20 years ago. I am very shocked. [During the] last shooting I was very surprised. But this shoot - f**k, you know, what happened?" one man said.
