A staff member at a south Auckland McDonald's has been assaulted by four tool-wielding thieves in an early-morning robbery.

The ordeal started at around 3:10am on Sunday morning when four males entered McDonald's on Cavendish Drive in the suburb of Papatoetoe.

The group, who were armed with tools, assaulted a staff member and stole items from the worker before fleeing the scene in a vehicle, police said.

"The staff member was not seriously injured but was understandably shaken by the incident," a police spokesperson said.

"Police are following a strong line of enquiry and can reassure the public that this appears to be an isolated incident," the spokesperson said.

So far no one has been arrested, police said, adding that the restaurant will remain closed for a period of time on Sunday for further investigation.

A McDonald's spokesperson told Newshub it has a range of security measures in place at its restaurants to keep staff safe.

"We're now assisting police with their investigation, including statements and CCTV," the spokesperson said.

"Management have already been providing support to staff and have made available our employee assistance programme."

Police urge anyone who witnessed the robbery to come forward and speak to them.

"We would like to hear from anyone in the area who witnessed the incident or who saw anything suspicious. If you can help, please call 105 and quote event number P055816860."
