A student who was caught bringing a BB gun onto school property on Thursday has been referred to Youth Aid.

Staff at Auckland's Marcellin College took the "realistic-looking pistol" from the student at 11:48am on Thursday. Police were soon at the scene.

A police spokesperson said the school decided not to enforce a lockdown and officers have spoken to the principal, Maria Prescott.

No one was injured and classes continued as normal.

An email sent by the principal to students and parents confirmed the BB gun was brought to their school.

"The Senior Leadership Team informed the NZ Police straight away and they attended onsite within 15 minutes," Prescott said.

"At 1pm today we held a year 8 liturgy and assembly in the whare pukapuka/library to support a number of ākonga/students who had heard about the incident in this year level."

She added the school is doing all they can to support students and others at the school.

"The safety of our students and staff has always been and will continue to be, our top priority."
