Homicide investigation launched after fatal attack on Auckland's Upper Queen Street

Police have launched a homicide investigation after a sudden death in central Auckland.

Emergency services swarmed to an apartment complex on Upper Queen Street on Wednesday afternoon after reports of one person with injuries. 

Stuff reported a stabbing took place in the foyer of the building.

Two people have been taken into custody as a result.

Detective Inspector Scott Beard told media on Wednesday afternoon the victim "suffered some injuries and collapsed" before they were taken to hospital and later died.

"It's very early in the investigation, so we don't know a motive, we don't know why, but that will be part of the investigation," Det Insp Beard said.

A scene investigation is underway and Police are examining a vehicle of interest as part of the scene.

No possible weapons have been recovered and it is unknown to police whether the victim resided at the apartments, Det Insp Beard said.

A St John spokesperson told Newshub earlier that they responded to the incident with two rapid response vehicles and an ambulance.
