'Very fast' meteors light up New Zealand's sky

Kiwis around the country have reported seeing a "burning ball of fire", with meteors spotted on Monday evening in the South Island and up to Auckland.

Members of the public quickly reported their sightings to WeatherWatch, which collects eyewitness accounts of meteors. The meteors were reported between 8pm and midnight, according to their reports, and people described the noise as a "loud sparkler burning out".

One person reported seeing a meteor in Temuka.

"Sounded like a loud sparkler burning out and it was bright and fast then seemed to burn out," the person said.

Another person in Lyttelton also said they saw a meteor.

Several people in Napier also spotted the flaming objects in the sky.

"Did anyone else just see that burning ball of fire in the sky?" one said. "Not sure if it was a meteorite but wow."

The New Zealand Herald reported that at around 8.50pm people saw two meteors shooting over Bombay, saying they were "pretty bright", with a "fireball" shooting across Glen Innes half an hour later "very high but very fast".

A meteor is a technical term for fireballs or shooting star that is produced when a meteoroid - otherwise known as space rock - enters the Earth's atmosphere at high speed and burns up, according to NASA.
