Weather: Wind and rain lashing country as gloomy day in store for North Island

Wind and rain will lash most of the country on Sunday with North Islanders likely to bear the brunt of the bad weather.

A broad area of low pressure is moving across the country, bringing heavy and widespread wind and rain, MetService says.

The Coromandel and Bay of Plenty are expected to be the wettest places as the wind and rain move east across the country.

A slew of severe weather warnings and watches are in place throughout the country with the Bay of Plenty east of Kawerau and Tairawhiti/Gisborne north of Ruatoria under an orange heavy rain warning until 9am.

Heavy rain watches are also in place for much of the upper North Island including Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Coromandel Peninsula, Taupō, Bay of Plenty, and Central North Island hill country from eastern Taranaki to Taihape and northwards to Waitomo.

A strong wind watch is in place for South Taranaki, Taihape, and Whanganui north of the City.

Down south, a road snowfall warning has been issued for Milford Road SH94 with snow expected to affect the road near the tunnel, where 1 to 2 cm may settle above 900 metres.

"The best advice this weekend is to keep up with the latest forecasts at  metservice.com," MetService meteorologist Andrew James said.

James added the good news is the weather is expected to settle again after the weekend, as a ridge of higher pressure rebuilds across Aotearoa.
