Wellington traffic could be disrupted by protests planned for Monday and during the next few weeks, police are warning.

The protests were being promoted in social media posts, police said in a statement.

"Police recognise the right to peaceful protest, and we also recognise that the public has a right to go about their lawful business.

"We urge protesters to consider their safety and the safety of others when planning their peaceful protest. Police will respond rapidly to unlawful behaviour with appropriate enforcement action and subsequent prosecution."

Police would be positioned at "strategic points" on Wellington roads, to help prevent unlawful behaviour and to promote safety, the statement said.
