Climate protesters climb atop gantry above major Wellington highway, forcing partial closure

Restore Passenger Rail protesters are again causing major disruption to the capital's commuter traffic, this time atop a gantry above State Highway 1.

On Friday morning, protesters climbed onto a gantry above SH1 heading south into Wellington City. Waka Kotahi said the highway's southbound lanes have been closed.

"This incident is affecting southbound traffic heading to Wellington down the Ngauranga Gorge and will cause significant congestion and delays."

The gantry is located a short distance south of Ngauranga Gorge and just before the Wellington Urban Motorway.

Waka Kotahi is urging motorists heading to Wellington City to "avoid the area" or delay their travel.

Police said officers were responding to the protest.
