The family of a young man who died after an alleged attack at an Auckland bus stop have paid tribute to their loved one.

The family said the man was the victim of an "unprovoked tragic attack".

"It is with great sadness and sorrow that we announce the tragic loss of a Son, Brother, Grandson, Uncle, Nephew and Friend," a family member wrote on social media.

"There are no words to describe how much he will be loved and missed.

"We will hold you forever in our hearts my Uso."

At around 12:50pm on Monday, an "altercation" broke out between members of the public at bus station in Albany, police said.

One person was injured and transported to Auckland Hospital in a critical condition but later died from their injuries.

A 16-year-old has appeared in Hamilton's Youth Court on Tuesday charged with the man's murder. He will next appear in court in October.

Detective Inspector Callum McNeill said the investigation remains ongoing, however, the police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the alleged attack.
