Residents have been urged to self-evacuate if they feel unsafe as several firefighters in Canterbury work to control a large bush-fire.

Fire and Emergency (FENZ) were called around 7:45pm on Wednesday night to the scrub fire in Pūkakī Downs.

"Crews are attending to a large fire at Pūkakī Downs, north of Twizel," a FENZ spokesperson said.

"Eleven appliances have been called in from Twizel, Mt Cook, Omarama, Burkes Pass and Lake Tekapo."

FENZ is urging anyone who feels unsafe in the area to self-evacuate.

According to FENZ, assessments are being done on whether people need to evacuate and "will work with police to carry these out should the need eventuate".

However, a police spokesperson told Newshub some properties have been evacuated as a precaution.

Police are assisting FENZ with traffic management.
