Homicide investigation launched after Albany victim dies in hospital

A person has died and a homicide investigation been launched after an incident in Albany on Monday afternoon.

Emergency services responded to the Albany bus station after an altercation between members of the public.

A witness told Stuff there was a lot of blood and someone had been stabbed - although this has not been confirmed by police. 

In a statement on Monday afternoon, Detective Inspector Callum McNeill from Waitematā CIB said one person was transported to Auckland Hospital in a critical condition.

"They have since died as a result of their injuries and a homicide investigation was subsequently launched," he said.

"Police are currently following positive lines of enquiry to identify the person responsible and hold them to account."

Det Insp McNeill said at this state it appears to be an isolated incident. 

"We know the community will be understandably alarmed by what has occurred today," he said.

"The public can expect to see an increased Police presence in the area while further enquiries are carried out.

"A scene guard is in place at the bus station this afternoon, which will likely remain in place overnight."

Auckland Transport (AT) executive general manager public transport services Stacey van der Putten said: "Events like this afternoon's attack are a very rare occurrence across our AT Metro network, but while Police are investigating, we are also looking at how we can increase our security presence at large stations like Albany."

Van der Putten said while Albany Bus Station is closed AT will detour all buses which stop at the station to a series of bus stops along Don McKinnon Dr.  Further information on this can be found on the Auckland Transport website.

Det Insp McNeill said Police are speaking to a number of witnesses in the area at the time.
