Honey Bear meth death: Parents 'angry' and 'betrayed' after man accused of son's manslaughter visited them in hospital

Aiden Sagala died seven months ago after unknowingly drinking from a beer can filled with liquid meth.

On Tuesday Aiden's father told Newshub a man came to the hospital before Aiden passed away, tearfully embracing him and saying: "I'm sorry about your son."

That visitor now stands accused of manslaughter - and Aiden's father feels "angry" and "betrayed".

Ma'a and Lila Sagala are the parents of Aiden Sagala, who was abruptly taken from them just over seven months ago.

"He is the only son I have. As I said, it's very hard for me as a father thinking about it every day of my life," Aiden's father Ma'a told Newshub.

Adding to his grief, is what he says Hamatjit Singh Kahlon did. He says Kahlon was one of several people who visited Aiden in hospital before he died.

"He hug me and cry on my shoulder and he say 'sorry about your son'," Ma'a told Newshub.

Kahlon has since been charged with Aiden's manslaughter. Kahlon tried to keep his name a secret but lost name suppression on Tuesday after a ruling from a High Court judge. Aiden died after drinking what he thought was a beer - it was actually liquid methamphetamine.

"That's why I keep [being] angry. Michael, if you put yourself in my shoes and how you feel if someone come and hug you [who's now been charged]," Ma'a told Newshub.

Ma'a told Newshub it was "a step" towards justice that the man accused of his son's killing had been named publicly. Suppression rules prevent Newshub from explaining how the pair knew each other. Kahlon is also facing multiple serious drug related charges.

Police have said Aiden was totally innocent - a victim of what they say was a significant drug importation. Aiden's mum Lila said Aiden always looked after her.

"Spoil my son because I love him from all my heart," she told Newshub.

On the night Aiden was rushed to Auckland hospital, he'd been talking to Lila on the phone while she was at home in Wellington. His mum said to him "I love you" and then Aiden collapsed.

"He said to me 'mum' and I was answering down Wellington and said 'I'm here' and he said 'mum' and that's when I know, something was wrong with him," Lila said.

As for Kahlon, Lila, a devout Christian, doesn't hold any ill will. She said she'll leave God to be the judge.

"I won't point my fingers to anyone. I was thinking about Father, if it's your will, I leave it to you," she said.

Lila Sagala remembers Aiden as a kind and caring boy. She said Aiden wanted to organise her 60th birthday this year and lended her and her husband money to help pay the bills.

Aiden's dad, himself a pastor, said his son planned to join the Defence Force. He said Aiden's dream was to protect the country.

"For my son's career to go to the Army, and now it's gone. There's no Army," he said.
