Police are investigating after a man who said he was armed robbed SkyCity Auckland casino on Friday afternoon.

In a statement, police said the offender entered the casino on Victoria Street at around 12:30pm,  claiming he had a gun before fleeing on foot with cash.

A SkyCity spokesperson confirmed the robbery had taken place and that the man had demanded money from staff.

"Impacted staff are now being offered support," the spokesperson told Newshub.

The robbery came at the end of a week when the Department of Internal Affairs applied to temporarily suspend SkyCity's gambling license after a complaint from a former customer.

The customer gambled at the Auckland casino between August 2017 and February 2021. They complained to the Department of Internal Affairs in February 2022.

As a result, the secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs has applied to the Gambling Commission to temporarily suspend SkyCity Casino Management Limited's casino operator license for a period "in the range of 10 days".
