'Suspicious' fire causes 'significant damage' to Auckland house

Police have launched an investigation after an early morning fire at an Auckland house was deemed suspicious.

Emergency services swarmed to a house on Cedar Heights Avenue in Massey at around 1am after multiple reports of a fire.

Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Nimmo of Waitematā CIB said the blaze has caused "significant damage".

"We can confirm the circumstances of the fire are being treated as suspicious and an investigation is underway," Nimmo said.

"A forensic examination is due to be carried out."

Police urge anyone with information about the blaze to contact them.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Police on 105 quoting the file number 230906/7256. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111."

The fire is the second of the morning after six people were treated for smoke inhalation after a blaze in a historic building in Invercargill.
