$20k of damage after Auckland supermarket ram raided, suspect crashes car into fence

The owner of a Māngere supermarket is fed up after his store was targeted by thieves overnight, causing at least $20,000 worth of damage.

A police spokesperson said the Kingsford Supermarket on Raglan St was ram-raided at 2:45am, when two offenders stole items from the store before fleeing in a different vehicle.

This prompted police to start a short pursuit before abandoning it because the offenders were driving dangerously.

"The vehicle later crashed into a fence in Treagon Place, Papatoetoe. Both vehicles have since been towed and will undergo a forensic examination," the spokesperson said.

Police confirmed one person is assisting them with their enquiries but there is no news on the second offender.

It has led to the store owner Aman Bains saying he believes there are no consequences for criminals.

"It's quite frustrating because there are no consequences for these guys and they will keep doing it," Bains told NZ Herald.

Bains said it'll take them weeks to get back on their feet after the ram raid caused "at the least, $20,000 worth of damage" and all the thieves stole was three boxes of beer and cigarettes.

"We need to get a builder involved with the shutter door, it's likely a structural issue and they have knocked down a concrete wall inside the building.

"In terms of inside, they have knocked out a small kitchen for the staff and, in doing so, and have damaged the water and power supply to the store."

Police urge anyone with information about the ram raid to contact them.

"Anyone with information that may assist is asked to contact Police via our 105 phone service, quoting job P056223058," the spokesperson said.

"Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111."

The ram raid comes after National's Erica Standford and Labour's Ginny Andersen clashed over crime in a fiery interview on AM last Friday.

Labour's police spokesperson Andersen put out a press release slamming National - alleging the party put out incorrect ramraid figures.

"We have seen a 70 percent decrease since August last year. So they peaked at 116 a month in August last year and of August this year we've reached 35 [ram-raids]," Andersen said.

Andersen admitted Aotearoa does have a "retail crime problem" but said the reporting of it has also increased.

"There is a problem with retail crime, and that is why we have reacted and made sure that we have more police and more measures in place for those businesses experiencing it," she said.
