Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown takes dig at Horowhenua, Gore in AM interview

The Mayor of Aotearoa's biggest city has taken a dig at districts south of the Bombays during an AM interview on future planning.

Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown has called on Wellington politicians to butt out of the city's affairs and believes fragmented decision-making and political meddling have stymied the city's growth.

Brown has written a manifesto calling for cross-party agreement on future planning and joined AM on Tuesday to discuss it.

The Auckland Mayor says he wants more levers available to him and Auckland Council to access funding.

Brown told AM's Ryan Bridge the Council has "less powers than the Mayor of Horowhenua".

"Wherever that is," he said.

For example, Brown said he can't even set the parking prices in his city "for goodness sakes".

"You wonder why people pay parking, we get more from the fines than we do from the parking because they're so low, we can't even do that."

Bridge admitted to Brown he pays for the parking fines instead of parking.

"That's ridiculous and it's because I can't set them," Brown said.

Brown added "it's the same parking fines in Gore".

"I don't imagine it's great problem to park Gore, you could probably park a logging truck in Gore for all I know about Gore."

Bridge jokingly replied saying AM has so far offended "the good people of Horowhenua and Gore".

"Well, that's alright, I don't see them very often. I wish them well wherever they are."

AM viewer and Gore resident Shane wrote into the show defending his town and said Brown is the reason "no one cares about Auckland or the fact it's struggling".

Shane encouraged Aucklanders to move down to Gore, saying it doesn't have the issues the super city is experiencing.

"We can teach you it's not all about you. Enjoy your day and your traffic," Shane said.
