Cruise ship bound for Auckland sheltering near Rangitoto as ex-Tropical Cyclone Lola closes port

A cruise ship bound for Auckland is sheltering near Rangitoto after ex-Tropical Cyclone Lola closed the port.

The Majestic Princess was due to arrive at the Port of Auckland at 4:30am on Monday morning, but according to Marine Traffic has been stopped behind Rangitoto for some time. The ship is coming from the capital of American Samoa Pago Pago.

A person who said they were aboard the cruise ship said on X the boat was going through the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Lola.

A person who posted a video of the rough seas told Newshub the ship is now in calm waters but waiting for the Port of Auckland to open.

"Luckily my husband Tim and I love the rough sea and don't get seasick so it was fun!"

A passenger who was due to board the ship on Monday afternoon shared an update with Newshub, saying the port was closed, delaying Majestic Princess' arrival.

He says posts on Facebook reveal a "very rough" night for the 4000 passengers on board.

Chris, who is not currently aboard the cruise ship but is scheduled to board later on Monday, told Newshub he was sent information about his delayed check-in.

"Guests who reside locally or have ground transportation arrangements should wait for us to advise of an updated embarkation schedule before departing for the pier," Majestic Princess cruise ship said, according to Chris.

"As previously advised, guests travelling to Auckland via air transportation should continue with their scheduled plans and will receive further updates upon arrival at the airport. We will reach out with updated information as soon as it is available."

The Port of Auckland says the boat should dock on Monday afternoon.
