Emergency services rushed to a Tauranga beach in the early hours of Thursday morning after a member of the public could hear someone calling for help from the water.

A police spokesperson said staff were called to Papamoa Beach at about 3:45am on Thursday.

"Police have attended and discovered someone in the water."

Police said it's unclear what the person was doing in the water, and they were assessed by St John.
