A fisherman is dead after being swept off rocks at Auckland's Anawhata Beach on Monday.

Emergency services were called to the scene after the man was swept into the water amid 2m swells.

Surf Lifesaving New Zealand (SLSNZ) said it was the third such incident involving rock fishers in the Piha area since the start of spring.

The death was "utterly tragic", chief executive Steve Fisher said.

"While we don't know the exact circumstances or cause of this incident, it is also a good reminder that the conditions on the coast can change rapidly," he said in a statement. "This highlights the importance of ensuring you have all the correct safety equipment, in particular, a life jacket, and that you check the forecast conditions - if in doubt, stay out."

It's understood the man wasn't wearing a lifejacket, SLNZ said.
