Hastings police have launched an investigation after a food delivery driver felt intimidated and their boss was shot at after a customer refused to pay for their order.

At around 9:30pm on Wednesday a food delivery driver dropped off an order to an address in Te Aute Rd, Pukahu.

Eastern District police Detective Senior Sergeant John McCarthy said a man at the property refused to pay for the food, so the driver "left the address feeling intimidated".

Det Snr Sgt McCarthy said the man's boss then called police and drove out to the Pukahu property herself, in an attempt to collect payment.

"While she was waiting outside for police, a person fired two shots in the direction of the woman and her vehicle."

Following the shots, the Armed Offenders Squad (AOS) were called and a 37-year-old man was arrested without incident.

"He now faces a number of charges including theft, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition and drug-related charges."

Det Snr Sgt McCarthy said the man is expected to appear in the Hastings District Court on Thursday.

Police are continuing to investigate the shooting and say they're not ruling out the possibility of further charges being laid.

"Police located a firearm and ammunition at the address and this has been seized pending an investigation."
