The man suspected of killing Wellington woman Irene Katsougiannis was her son, Soterios Katsougiannis, who died overseas in Hong Kong, RNZ understands.

A homicide investigation was launched after the body of the 62-year-old was found in her Miramar home on Monday.

Police have said the person responsible was "a man known to her", who left New Zealand on Sunday and had since died in Hong Kong.

They said local police there were investigating the circumstances.

An acquaintance previously told RNZ she had three adult sons, a mother in her 80s and that her husband died a few years ago.

Irene Katsougiannis was a piano tutor at Queen Margaret College.

Principal Jayne-Ann Young said the school was saddened to learn of the death of their "very dear colleague and friend".

"Our thoughts are with her family.

"As always, we remain focused on the wellbeing of our staff, students and whānau throughout this difficult time."

Netball Wellington community director Sue Geale said Irene Katsougiannis was part of the centre between 2014 and 2021, and set up Olympic Netball Club.

"We offered our venue to the Olympics players current and ex, if they want to get together and celebrate the lady that she was. There's always an outpouring of concern and support, no matter who in our community is going through a tough time."

Geale said hearing about the death was a huge shock to the netball community in the capital.

Family friend Katy previously told RNZ Irene Katsougiannis had also been her netball coach.

"[She] was not only a great netball coach and friend to her netball family, she was also a close family friend and valued member of the Greek community. Her loss will be felt far and wide," she said.

"I am in shock and my heart and sincere condolences go out to her family and all who love her."

Greek community group Odysseus Brotherhood paid tribute to her on Facebook.

"The Odysseus Brotherhood is saddened to hear the very tragic news of the passing of our dear friend Irene Katsougiannis," the post read.

"Please join us in our thoughts and prayers at this time to Irene's family... may her soul rest in peace."

The scene examination was expected to be completed by the weekend, and police will report their findings to the Coroner.
